Terra Cotta.
Bold, 50 ml.
After another long swim, we came back to the shore and lay out on the ground to heat up and dry out again. The earth was parched and warm, even in the shade; orange-brown clay baked solid by the sun over the longest days of the year. This cycle of hot earth and cool water became the rhythm of our days. In and out, like breathing.
For a while, we lay on our backs staring up at the sky, then we turned, practically in sync, to lie on our fronts. Just under their burnished skin, I watched their shoulder blades moving back and forth like cresting waves as they stretched their arms, out and in again, back and forth. Glistening droplets, beads of sweat and salty water ran slowly across their back, caught the light and turned to steam as the sun streamed through the swaying branches of the orange tree above us. The shadows of the leaves danced across them, wrapped around their body, and receded again.
