Falling Leaves.

I saw her once more, only briefly, on an autumn evening just before the rain came.
She looked well. Her hair was cut short and she had herself wrapped up in a chunky woollen scarf and a long coat, already preparing herself for a winter that wouldn’t properly arrive for another month or so. She was clutching a paper shopping bag and a big ceramic keep cup to her chest, stepping out from the laneway to cross the street and into the park where the trees hang over and form a kind of feathery canopy.
She looked happier.

As she walked away again, stepping carefully down the half crumbled path, a few golden brown leaves started to fall from the trees overhead and swirled around her in the breeze, as if on purpose. There always had been something sort of magical about her. Just then, before she vanished behind the curve in the path, she turned back and I wonder if she saw me as well.
